About Zentangle®

The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.  Zentangle®

The Zentangle Method is rooted in the idea that the process of creating art speaks to the human spirit.  We are all born with the urge to express ourselves in some way and as children we dance, sing, draw, paint, role play, and create with whatever materials we find.  At some point in our lives many of us “put away childish things” and leave the creation of art to others.  Zentangle reconnects us to this part of ourselves.

  • Zentangle is non-representational; you can’t draw a bad duck because you don’t draw ducks.  There is no up or down, and turning your tile can give you new insights.
  • There are no mistakes in Zentangle – there are just new opportunities to create something else.
  • You don’t plan your tile – you just start with a dot, a line, a stroke and let your pen and your mind direct you.
  • Because you don’t plan your tile you don’t have a stake in the outcome – you don’t know what it will look like, so you can’t have “done it wrong”.
  • Zentangle is simple – Zentangle patterns consist of a few basic strokes, so if you can draw a line and a dot you can practise Zentangle successfully.

There are a number of reasons why Zentangle has become so popular, and why people continue to practise this meditative art form:

  • It’s relaxing
  • It relieves stress
  • It improves eye/hand coordination and fine motor skills
  • It’s rewarding and enriching
  • It’s increases attention and concentration levels
  • It’s a good team-building practice
  • It’s a positive, feel-good experience
